Regulation of Advertisements is something that in this day and age we particularly need to take advantage of. Have you ever ordered something from a menu with pictures on it to describe the dish's and it comes looking nothing like that? This sort of false or deceptive advertising is actually banned in the U.K. Why isn't it banned in the United States?
The Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations is designed to protect anyone who is buying anything from aggressive sales techniques that incomplete information or give deceptive messages. This regulation was created by the U.K. in order to better monitor what advertisements are being put out.
In other parts of the world, I learned they have extreme cases of ad regulation. For example, in China one will be fined up to $150,000 if they use statements like "the best" in their marketing campaigns. Also children aren't allowed to be in advertisements under 10 years old because it is misleading. In Chile, one is not allowed to advertise products that are high in calories, sugar, sodium and saturated fats to children that are under the age of 14. They cannot promote any of these foods and are illegal to have in cartoons, etc. Furthermore, in Ireland all advertisements that target children under 18 cannot have celebrities in it. Furthermore foods that aren't healthy from being high in sodium, sugar or fats are banned from advertising on channels. This creates a lot of issues for those companies who are trying to target younger children.
I believe these are really good steps to start helping regulate advertisements easier and we should utilize them in the United States. This way it would help with false claims and advertisements that lead to many individuals being in lawsuits. Overall, I believe that we should only advertise foods/exercises/products that are proven to be good for us. We shouldn't rely on someone else telling us to try something because it usually isn't in good favor.
